Holotropic States of Consciousness: Technologies of the Sacred (Video on Demand)

A 4-part pre-recorded video series with Stanislav Grof

cost $99

In this 4-part video series, renowned clinical psychiatrist Stanislav Grof take us through an exploration of what changes need to be made in the field of modern psychotherapy when we study non-ordinary states of consciousness. Through more than sixty years of research and study into nonordinary states, Grof has acquired a wealth of wisdom in what he has coined holotropic states. Grof explains that in our ordinary state of consciousness, we use just a fraction of our potential; when we tap into these holotropic states, our realm of possibility expands exponentially. Grof details how and when these holotropic states are accessed, the types of experiences that people have when accessing these states, the striking similarity of these experiences to those described in the great spiritual traditions, and how to work with these states to achieve a new level of healing and transformation.

Module 1:  Radical Vision of Psychology (1 hour, 35 minutes)

This module discusses the six areas that require substantial and far-reaching change of our understanding of consciousness and the human psyche in health and disease:

  • The Nature of Consciousness and Its Relationship to Matter
  • New Cartography of the Human Psyche
  • Architecture of Emotional and Psychosomatic Disorders
  • Effective Therapeutic Mechanisms
  • Strategy of Psychotherapy and Self Exploration
  • The Role of Spirituality in Human Life

Module 2: Spiritual Emergency (1 hour, 17 minutes)

The most important implications of holotropic states of consciousness is the discovery that the episodes that are currently diagnosed as psychoses and indiscriminately treated with suppressive medication are actually difficult stages of a personality transformation and spiritual opening. It is not an exaggeration to say that a well-integrated psychospiritual crisis can move the individual to a higher level of consciousness evolution, better psychosomatic health, increased zest for life, an expanded worldview, and spirituality that is universal, nondenominational, and all-inclusive.

Module 3: Understanding Violence and Greed (1 hour, 29 minutes)

This module will describe the observations from the research of holotropic states of consciousness that provide new insights into the nature and roots of human aggression and greed, and suggest effective strategies for alleviating the destructive and self-destructive tendencies of the human species.

Module 4: Cosmic Game (1 hour, 37 minutes)

In the nonordinary states of consciousness we look at the most far out experiences; in these modules we focus on philosophical, metaphyiscal and spiritual insights. We see far-reaching parallels with the great mystical traditions of the world, which Aldous Huxley called perennial philosophy, finding surprising compatibility with the revolutionary advances of modern science that are usually referred to as new or emerging paradigms.

Stanislav Grof, M.D., is a psychiatrist with more than sixty years of experience in research of holotropic states of consciousness, a large and important subgroup of non-ordinary states that have healing, transformative, heuristic, and evolutionary potential.
