Quantum Physics, Embodiment and Consciousness

Quantum Physics, Embodiment and Consciousness

With Shantena Augusto Sabbadini  •  Recorded Feb-March 2019

A 3-Part webinar series

The great popularity of quantum physics in New Age circles hardly does it a good service. For the most part those treatments are closer to fantasy than to science. The intent of this seminar is to introduce the basics of quantum physics and to discuss their interpretation in plain language accessible to everyone, while at the same time staying close to solid ground – or at least trying to clearly mark any departure from it.

The main focus will be the implications of quantum physics for our understanding of consciousness. Quantum physics implies the notion of an observer, and therefore, in some sense, of consciousness. But how we should understand the role of the observer is a crucial and often misunderstood point. We will closely investigate it and explore its connection with the embodied nature of experience.

Shantena Augusto Sabbadini

Shantena Augusto Sabbadini worked as a theoretical physicist at the University of Milan and at the University of California. In Milan he researched the foundations of quantum physics, focusing on the description of the quantum process of observation, a problem that keeps fascinating him up to the present. In California he contributed to the first identification of a black hole.

In the 1990’s he was a scientific consultant for the Eranos Foundation, an East-West research center founded under the guidance of C.G. Jung in the 1930's. In that context he studied Chinese classics under the guidance of the Dutch sinologist Rudolf Ritsema and produced various translations and commentaries, including the Yijing and the Daodejing. Since 2002 he has been associate director of the Pari Center for New Learning, an alternative educational institution located in the small medieval village of Pari in Tuscany, Italy. He teaches short courses at the Schumacher College and leads workshops on Daoism, quantum physics and the Yijing as a tool for introspection.
