Holotropic States of Consciousness: Technologies of the Sacred

With Stanislav Grof  •  Dec 20, 2018

A pre-recorded 4-part Video Series with Stanislav Grof

In this 4-part video series, renowned clinical psychiatrist Stanislav Grof take us through an exploration of what changes need to be made in the field of modern psychotherapy when we study non-ordinary states of consciousness. Through more than sixty years of research and study into nonordinary states, Grof has acquired a wealth of wisdom in what he has coined holotropic states. Grof explains that in our ordinary state of consciousness, we use just a fraction of our potential; when we tap into these holotropic states, our realm of possibility expands exponentially. Grof details how and when these holotropic states are accessed, the types of experiences that people have when accessing these states, the striking similarity of these experiences to those described in the great spiritual traditions, and how to work with these states to achieve a new level of healing and transformation.

Stanislav Grof, M.D., is a psychiatrist with more than sixty years of experience in research of holotropic states of consciousness, a large and important subgroup of non-ordinary states that have healing, transformative, heuristic, and evolutionary potential. In the past, he was Principal Investigator in a psychedelic research program at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Chief of Psychiatric Research at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and Scholar-in-Residence at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA.

Currently, he is Professor of Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, CA, conducts professional training programs in Holotropic Breathwork and transpersonal psychology, and gives lectures and seminars worldwide. He is one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology and the founding president of the International Transpersonal Association (ITA). In 2007, he was granted the prestigious Award >Vision 97< from the Václav and Dagmar Havel Foundation in Prague and in 2010 the Thomas R. Verny Award from the Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH) for his pivotal contributions to this field. He received an honorary Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP) and in 2018  another one for Psychedelic Therapy and Healing Arts from the Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, California.

Among his publications are over 150 articles in professional journals and the books Beyond the Brain; LSD Psychotherapy; The Cosmic Game; Psychology of the Future; The Ultimate Journey; When the Impossible Happens; Healing Our Deepest Wounds; Modern Consciousness Research and the Understanding of Art; The Stormy Search for the Self; Spiritual Emergency; and Holotropic Breathwork (the last three with Christina Grof). He was also invited as consultant for special effects in the Metro Goldwyn Meyer science fiction movie Brainstorm and 20th Century Fox science fiction movie Millenium.

Since April 2016, Stan has been happily married to Brigitte Grof. They live together in Germany and California and travel the inner and outer worlds in tandem, conducting seminars and Holotropic Breathwork workshops worldwide.

Part 2: Spiritual Emergency

Dec 21, 2018 2:00am

The most important implications of holotropic states of consciousness is the discovery that the episodes that are currently diagnosed as psychoses and indiscriminately treated with suppressive medication are actually difficult stages of a personality transformation and spiritual opening. It is not an exaggeration to say that a well-integrated psychospiritual crisis can move the individual to a higher level of consciousness evolution, better psychosomatic health, increased zest for life, an expanded worldview, and spirituality that is universal, nondenominational, and all inclusive.

In the nonordinary states of consciousness we look at the most far out experiences; in these modules we focus on philosophical, metaphyiscal and spiritual insights. We see far-reaching parallels with the great mystical traditions of the world, which Aldous Huxley called perennial philosophy, finding surprising compatibility with the revolutionary advances of modern science that are usually referred to as new or emerging paradigms.
