Mario Martinez proposes that longevity is learned, and we have the capacity to change how our genes express disease. He reports on his studies of healthy centenarians worldwide which found that how they live, and the cultural beliefs they share, are the chief determinants, with only 20% attributed to genetics. All centenarians have rituals. The meaning of what we do is the most important thing. Culture is what influences the mind.
