MENAS KAFATOS – Perception, Science and the Self, part 1
Guadalupe Room
What is the sense of identity, that stays with us from the day we are born until we pass on, what is this “self”? Perennial philosophies have tried to address this for at least 2,000 years. In the case of us, humans, the individual self is a conscious entity, with self-awareness and objectified awareness. Do other species possess a sense of self, is consciousness a characteristic of life in general? Does life (and consciousness) exist throughout the universe?

The scientific paradigm of classical Newtonian physics, says nothing about the role of consciousness, the nature of the mind and the act of observation itself. However, if we are to adopt and follow the classical scientific world view, then the purpose of existence, the meaning of life, the individual self, the act of observation, free will, to mention a few, all become hollow and imaginary concepts, with no foundational existence. The only “things” that exist are space, time, objects, forces, energy, all obeying immutable laws subject to the rigors of mathematics. However, that science is outdated for at least 80 years now. Quantum phenomena are not phenomena until registered by an act of observation. As such, observers participate in the phenomena they observe. Quanta acquire specific properties, such as the value and direction of spin, upon observation. The quantum world is a world of events, a world of “haps”, and not a world of “hard” physical entities. Quantum theory has inexorably opened the door to consciousness. However, it has not, and it cannot as it is still based on the object-subject split, provide any understanding of consciousness in itself.

One may expect that consciousness should be subject to scientific investigation, but in truth little progress has been made on that, last frontier, of science. Underlying principles applying at all levels of reality, manifest in conscious processes. These principles will provide the necessary links between current quantum science and future science, based on Consciousness and its operations through qualia. I will argue that the true science that is emerging is a consciousness-based science and its view is radically different. It is linked to ancient truths. I term it Observer-based Science, to distinguish it from current Object-based Science. Obs-b Science will be understood to be complementary to Obj-b Science. Several examples will be given.
IGOR KUFAYEV – Seeing from the Heart
Alum Rock Room
No matter how clear is the grasp of Ultimate Reality on the intellectual level, it is still a concept. It is for that reason Perennial traditions speak of merging into the Heart, for it reconciles the seer (subject) and the seen (object) into Oneness – as natural a state as Being itself. That alignment is represented by union of Stillness and Movement and spontaneously takes place at the Spiritual Heart.

The heart region is associated with many functions, and often serves as a metaphor for feeling, emotion and intuition. However, the Spiritual Heart, is not the physical heart, nor is it the (Anahata chakra) energetic wheel, but the abode of Consciousness itself. The Spiritual Heart transcends Time and Space, yet it has a precise location in the human body, and experience places it in the chest, two digits to the right of the central line, almost mirroring the physical heart.

Entering the Heart – as most explicitly spoken in the traditions of Sufism and Tantra – is paramount to direct realization of one’s essential nature. For it allows Seeing through the Heart. The Heart is the seat of Vital Force contained in perfect equilibrium; direct apprehension of the Supreme Essence is fully cognized here. From here Oneness flows as waves of wakefulness and expresses itself as diversity, with your very heartbeat as Stillness in motion.
CHARLES EISENSTEIN – The Mind of Separation – A Deprogramming Session
San Jose Room
We live today within the legacy of a story of separation that is rapidly becoming obsolete. It says that humanity is separate from nature, and that we are separate individuals in an impersonal universe of force and mass. Upon that story, our civilization is built: our technology, our medicine, our money, our politics, our wars, our prisons. Though we may reject it intellectually, that story still bears tremendous power. The habits of separation live inside us, and the institutions of separation surround us. How do we take the next step into a new story of reunion, of interbeing?

We know in our hearts that separation is a myth. We know that what happens to any being happens to oneself; that the smallest choices have untold significance; that purpose, intelligence, and consciousness pervade the whole universe. But do any of us believe it fully? How often do we act from that place? For a long time, it has been a lonely knowledge, ridiculed and denied by a million voices both external and internal. Our heart’s knowledge needs allies if we are to act from it consistently.

The purpose of this gathering is to provide such allies: to align heart and mind in a story of interbeing. Using concepts, experiences, but most importantly the power of story, we will inhabit this new and ancient way of being a little more fully. The result will be expanded clarity and power, because acting from nonseparation, we are capable of things that once seemed impossible.
MARLIES COCHERET – How Can We Live the Stillness of Being in Our Body’s World?
Isn’t it magical to be in a body? We can have all kinds of experiences in our body’s world. Feeling our skin touched by the warmth of the sun and the breeze of the wind. Being nourished by the immense fragrances while walking through a garden of jasmine. Are you also in awe of the beauty of life? Then, slowly closing your eyes and entering into your inner sanctuary, finding yourself alone with Silence and listening. A miracle that we so easily take for granted. When silence is experienced as the Beloved. It will take seat in the body into the senses as sweet aliveness-vibration-nectar. You don’t need a physical lover for that. It is your relationship with love itself that will be reflected in your body. It is an inclusive way of making love with all of life. Knowing deep within that you are that life relating to itself in the form of different appearances. Come and join this pre-conference workshop and deepen the taste of stillness in your body. First we wake up out of existence and then into existence into our bodies and come to wholeness.

STEPHEN LABERGE – Perception, Dreaming and Awakening
San Jose Room
Our dream experiences seem so real to our sleeping minds that it is usually only after we awaken that we recognize our dreams as the mental experiences they are. Happily, there is an important exception: sometimes while dreaming, we become conscious that we are dreaming. This remarkable state of consciousness is referred to as “lucid dreaming” and is learnable and rewarding. Scientific research has proven the objective reality of lucid dreams, and has led to the development of new methods of inducing them. I will provide a brief overview of lucid dreaming, touching on techniques and technology for achieving lucid dreaming; a model of dreaming and waking consciousness; scientific research on mind-body relationships during REM sleep; and several applications of lucid dreaming — exploring consciousness, enhancing creativity, personal development and self-integration, dream yoga, and transcendent experience.

Of the many applications and implications of lucid dreaming, the one of greatest, deepest meaning is its potential to stimulate spiritual awakening. Implicit in lucid dreaming is the knowledge that one is dreaming, which is to say, that one is not awake. Yet this is the paradox: as the beginning of wisdom is “to know that one knows nothing,” so too, the beginning of awakening is to know that one is not awake.  If we suppose we already are awake, as we do in both the dreams we call “false awakenings” and also those we do not call dreams at all, but presumptively term “waking life,” how can we even frame the possibility of waking up?  We already (believe) we are. Yet as both ancient Eastern spiritual teachings and recent Western psychological science agree, much of ordinary life is lived in such an automatic unconscious manner, that to say that most of us somnambulate through life seems little exaggeration. In the words of Bahauddin Naqshband (d. 1388) “Here we are all of us in a dream caravan. A caravan, but a dream. A dream, but a caravan. And we know which are the dreams. Therein lies the hope.”
KAZUAKI TANAHASHI – Drawing a Circle
Berryessa Room
The circle you draw with a brush reflects the state of your body and mind at that very moment. You observe what you have just drawn, listen to the unheard voice, and learn much about the deep part of your consciousness. On the other hand, you can draw a circle just the way you would like it to be—kind, thoughtful, joyous, bold, free, or wild. What you draw can be how you are and what you are. In the Zen tradition, a circle called enso is an expression of the completeness of each moment, or enlightenment. You can also write a message, such as “Wake up!” to go with it. Drawing a circle is a simple but can be an amazingly complex and inspiring creative experience!
RICHARD LANG – Seeing Who You Really Are
Alum Rock Room
This workshop is a refreshingly modern way of discovering who you really are – the boundless, timeless awareness that is everyone’s True Self.

In the workshop you will be guided through awareness exercises that invite you to notice the difference between what you are for others, your appearance, and what you are for yourself, your reality. You are not required to believe or imagine anything. As amazing as it sounds, all you are asked to do is look.

What a treasure you find when you look: All things are within you. Come to the workshop and discover this beautiful, deep truth about yourself. And then go on re-discovering who you really are in your daily life, whenever you choose.
A. H. ALMAAS & KAREN JOHNSON – The Instrument of Perception
San Jose Room
While the brain is indispensable for perception, it is not the perceiver. Consciousness is what makes any experience possible. To understand perception we need to understand the relationship of consciousness to the physical apparatus of the brain. We will explore how pure nondual consciousness functions through the brain by expressing itself as an individual consciousness.

We will use exercises and practices to wake up to the significance of the individual consciousness and its indispensable role in perception.

RUPERT SPIRA – The Essence of Non-Duality San Jose Room Be in touch with the inherent peace of our true nature, the absence of lack or dis-ease, the absence of the slightest inclination to move away from the now. Make your home in the now; make your home as that. Everything that anyone has ever deeply longed for resides in our own Being. All the love, all the peace, all the happiness for which anyone has ever truly longed resides in the simple knowing of our own Being as it is – its knowing of itself. If we look for it anywhere else, we will always be frustrated. If we look for love in relationships, peace in situations or states, and happiness in objects, we will always be frustrated. These objects will seem temporarily to give us what we want but, after a while, the peace, love or happiness that seemed to be delivered by the situation, relationship or object will fade, and we will set out again in search of a new situation, relationship or object in the hopes of finding the apparently lost peace, love and happiness. Sooner or later we begin to learn the message that what we truly long for in life, whether we call it happiness or enlightenment, doesn’t reside in any kind of object or experience, however subtle; it doesn’t reside in a situation, a relationship, an experience or an object. This is the message that all suffering gives us. Suffering is to the mind what pain to the body. Just as pain is a message from the intelligence of the system, telling us that the body needs attention, so suffering is a message from the intelligence of the same system telling us that we have mistaken ourselves for a separate self, and are seeking to fulfill that illusory self through the acquisition of an object, state or relationship. All suffering simply tells us that we are looking in the wrong place for happiness; we are looking towards an object. Suffering tells us, ‘I, happiness, don’t live there. I cannot be found in an object, state, situation, relationship or experience. I live in the intimacy of your own Being. I am the intimacy of your own Being. That is the only place to find Me. I am always there, simply available, open, ready to be recognized’.
JOHN HAGELIN – Enlightenment and ‘Supernormal’ Abilities? Are they Related? Guadalupe Room Supernormal abilities: celestial vision, divine healing, levitation, bilocation… Are they real? If they are real, how do they work? Can we experience and unfold such exotic capabilities? How, exactly? Do supernormal abilities belong on our evolutionary path? How are they related to Enlightenment? Why are they included as the keystone chapter in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali—the classic text of Yoga? Dr. Hagelin unites cutting-edge discoveries in quantum physics and neuroscience to forge a new understanding of consciousness and the physical universe—mind and matter—revealing a profound connection between our inner and outer realities. This emerging paradigm provides a “theory of everything” in which the individual is truly cosmic and Enlightenment is our birthright. With proper guidance and techniques, Enlightenment is gained with ease. It is the highest, most essential goal in life. With every step in that direction, every aspect of life is profoundly enriched. And along with that growth comes a natural command of the laws of nature that, to others, will seem super-natural. Join Dr. Hagelin for a fascinating exploration of the vast range of human potential—an all-encompassing perspective of humanity that is both visionary and practical.
STANISLAV GROF – Psychospiritual Death and Rebirth and Spiritual Quest: A Healing Our Deepest Wounds Branham Room In this richly slide-illustrated seminar, we will explore the deep domains of the psyche currently unrecognized by mainstream psychiatry – the perinatal realm (related to biological birth) and the transpersonal realm (historical and archetypal domain of the collective unconscious, karmic matrices, and phylogenetic memories). We will show that the deepest roots of our individual and collective problems do not start in infancy and childhood – as assumed by academic psychiatry – but reach deep into these transbiographical domains. This finding might seem discouraging, but is outweighed by the discovery of powerful therapeutic mechanisms operating on these levels – the process of psychospiritual death and rebirth, reliving of karmic memories, emergence of archetypal material, experiences of cosmic unity, and others. The new findings concerning the nature of consciousness and the dimensions of the human psyche are essential for individuals involved in psychotherapy, serious self-exploration, and spiritual quest. They are also necessary for understanding the ritual and spiritual life of humanity (shamanism, rites of passage, ancient mysteries, mysticism, and religion). The insights from this work also throw new light on destructive sociopolitical events. We will explore the remarkable parallels between the paintings of individuals reliving birth and the demagogic imagery in posters, cartoons, and caricatures from the time of wars, bloody revolutions, genocide, and severe economic and sociopolitical crisis.
JAC O’KEEFFE – Born To Be Free Alum Rock Room All that appears as the world is dependent on you to validate its existence and this can only happen if you have taken it to be true that you have an independent existence. Any moment that the idea of an autonomous you is perceived in awareness you are literally believing yourself into existence. An inherent creative capacity in consciousness manifests what is happening now, offering an experience that presents an advantage or disadvantage for a viewer interested and invested in the phenomenal show. There is an absence of rest for the one who seeks an advantage. All the while, the stillness and divine exquisiteness of Reality is ignored. The play of consciousness will never stop – it does not need to stop. What is trying to shine through in every moment is the seeing that consciousness does not rotate around you. Your center point is everywhere and nowhere and only the body localizes perception. This happening allows consciousness to view its own creation from within the phenomenal show, creating as it is viewing. Transcendence is not possible from a localized perspective that is inherent in itself. Be free of all points of view. Be free from the duality of hope and fear. Understand that the conditioning of the body-mind is not personal, it does not define anything beyond a character. When beliefs are running as real, you are hiding from your true self. Realize the functioning activity of manifestation and how the construction of consciousness is nothing more than a pattern. In this workshop Jac offers a snapshot of how consciousness works, inviting you to recognise for yourself where subjective perception is taking your attention away from Reality. With wisdom and true seeing, a phenomenal freedom arises and in the simplicity of being ordinary the fullness of being human manifests in all its magnificence.
ISAAC SHAPIRO – Embodying This Love Affair With Truth Berryessa Room An invitation to be in life in a way that is beautiful to you and those around you. What I notice after 22 years of holding meetings internationally, is that to recognize our nature as awareness is fairly easy. However to live as awareness requires becoming aware of automatic, unconscious mechanisms which actually produce the sense of “I”. These becomes a filter that life is looked at through and because we are so familiar with the filter, it doesn’t even show up on our radar. These mechanisms function in a way that is not only painful to ourselves, but to all around us especially those that we are closest to. If these remain unconscious, they will continue until we die. We will explore together what facilitates these mechanisms becoming conscious and what works to integrate or bring them to peace.
DEEPAK CHOPRA – Neuroscience of Enlightenment Guadalupe Room
  • Are we in the midst of a major paradigm shift in science?
  • Is there an ultimate reality?
  • Does consciousness conceive, govern, construct and become the physical universe?
  • Is the universe becoming self aware in the human nervous system?
  • Is the next stage of human development conscious evolution?
  • Do we have the ability to influence the future evolution of the cosmos?
  • How does our understanding of consciousness as pure potentiality enhance our capacity for intuition, creativity, conscious choice making, healing, and the awakening of dormant potentials such as non local communication and non local sensory experience?
  • How does our understanding of consciousness also enhance our capacity for total well being (physical, emotional, spiritual, social, community, financial and ecological)?
Deepak will address all these questions as well as practical ways to experience higher consciousness, transformation and healing.
MATTHEW FOX – The Teachings of the Mystics: Poets of Heart-Centered Consciousness and Perception San Jose Room The mystics offer us an alternative perception from that of everyday society–at least society as Western culture currently defines it. Instead of leading with rationality and differences, the mystic leads with intuition and unitive experiences or what Julian of Norwich called “oneing.” We are all mystics if we allow ourselves to be such. In this immersion into the teachings of the mystics, we will explore some of the deep, challenging, and delightful teachings of the Western mystics about personal and societal transformation. We will focus in particular on Western mystics because they have been so sorely ignored even by Western culture and religion. As Ted Roszak put it, “The Enlightenment held mystics up for ridicule as the worst offense against science and reason.” It is time to heed the mystics again and to search out their powers of wisdom and transformation—and above all to awaken the mystic that is each one of us. We will delve into the teachings of Einstein and Hildegard of Bingen, Adrienne Rich and Meister Eckhart among others. We will also learn practices that awaken the mystic in ourselves, including chanting, circle dancing, and more. In addition, we will outline the four paths of creation spirituality that help us to name the deep experience of our mystical lives by way of the via positiva (joy and delight), the via negativa (silence and letting go, but also including suffering and the dark night of the soul), the via creativa (creativity), and the via transformativa (compassion and social justice).
DAVID SHANNAHOFF-KHALSA – Kundalini Yoga Meditation Techniques for Enlightenment Berryessa Room This is an experiential workshop conducted in chairs for beginners or advanced practitioners. We will begin by tuning in with a mantra that opens a protected meditative space to help shield and balance ourselves, and to enhance the flow of a powerful healing energy. Several short exercises will follow that increase and raise our energy to help support and motivate our practice, followed by a three minute technique to increase our focus, clarity, and intuitive space. Following this short easy warm up that can support any meditative practice. We will practice three 31-minute meditations. The first is one to help take us into a deep meditative space and is specific to help reduce and eliminate the blocks that hinder our awakening. It includes a simple and relaxed hand-arm mudra, the eye focus called ajna band to help lock the mind, and a mantra that helps purge the subconscious mind and cut through the blocks that hinder our awakening, followed by a brief relaxation. The second major technique is chanting an 8-part mantra for 31 minutes to help open, balance, and heal the 8 chakras. This meditation includes the focus on the third eye and a simple hand mudra relaxed in the lap, followed by relaxation. The final 31 minute meditation uses a novel and relaxed hand-arm posture held in front of the heart center, (eyes closed), and uses the most powerful mantra in the system of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. This mantra induces an incredibly positive state of mind, and one that is open to receive the great blessings of the Divine, where the practitioner experiences a great golden healing light. This series of three meditations covers all the bases, and leads to a very balanced and blissful state of being. When practiced daily or near daily the awakening toward the enlightened states is vastly accelerated.
ELLEN EMMET – The Awakening Body Alum Rock Room When the feeling-understanding that ‘I’ is Universal, ever-present Awareness has resonated deeply at all levels of thinking feeling and perceiving, our body is experienced in line with its natural state of transparency and flow. Its music is pure openness, spaciousness and sensitivity. However, for most of us, the deep rooted and conditioned habits in the body that create and perpetuate the illusion that our identity is limited, solid and separate, remain unseen and active beneath the surface of our contemplation. Thus the real ‘I’, Awareness, appears to be separate and limited. Meanwhile, the body’s harmonious and organic functioning remains compromised by an unnatural, complicated and, ultimately, impossible mission to maintain the tangible sense of an illusory separate identity. During the Awakening Body sessions, we investigate this unfounded feeling of separation. With openness as our ground, we use sensing and tactile explorations, visualizations, postures, movements and breathing, and submit the sensitivity of our body to this pure openness. We allow the felt belief in separation, which lives as crystallized energy in the cellular, muscular, skeletal, lymphatic and nervous systems of the body, to be experienced directly. In time, this allows a gentle and natural realignment with the felt understanding that the body’s true nature and substance is this very openness.
BENTINHO MASSARO – Understanding Perception from a Timeless Perspective Branham Room Perception and time are indivisible phenomena. To illustrate: Imagine a frozen snapshot of reality, timeless and static. If consciousness were to be stuck at looking at existence through this single point of view, or snapshot, it would not experience time, and perception wouldn’t be the evolving display that it is now. Things would just be static and motionless. Perception and time are co-dependent. In many ways, we could say that perception = time, and time = perception. So to understand perception, we can take a deeper, more ‘microscopic’ look at what time actually is. My view and direct experience of time is that it is an effect that is created when consciousness projects its ‘witnessing light’ through a series of different optional configurations (snapshots) of reality, or: points of view (of existence). When we watch a movie (motion-picture), we are having an experience of time, but when we deconstruct the actual mechanics of a movie, we realize that the time-perception we have when looking at the playing movie, is nothing more but the effect of 24 different points of view per second moving in front of the projector light in sequence. Thus, creating the illusion of movement, time, space, continuity, evolution, etc. In other words: the movement of consciousness through an infinite array of different possible configurations of reality ‘in sequence’ creates perception, as we know it. When we truly realize perception (time) to consist of parallel (=simultaneously co-existing) configurations of ‘energy’, being witnessed in a particular sequence as is appropriate to our being’s desire to explore the infinite potential of existence, a whole new world of realization, joy, passion and co-creation opens up to us. We start to live and play again, in ways we never before thought possible.
DEEPAK CHOPRA – What Is Consciousness & Where Is It? What is the fundamental activity in the universe? Although neuroscience has made enormous progress in looking at the brain correlates of subjective and objective experience, there is still no theory on how we experience mental or perceptual reality. This is known as the “hard problem” in consciousness research.
  • Is there a scientifically viable way to explain consciousness?
  • Does mainstream science have the methodologies to address this question?
  • How do we explain intention, insight, intuition, imagination, creativity, or free will?
  • Is free will an illusion?
  • Are there states of consciousness that go beyond waking, dreaming and sleeping?
Wisdom traditions speak of higher states of consciousness such as soul consciousness, cosmic consciousness, divine consciousness, and unity consciousness. Is there a way of understanding these states or validating them scientifically? Is our current science which is based on a subject/object split equipped to answer these mysteries? What is the nature of the universe? What is the of nature awareness that makes it possible for us to experience the universe? Deepak will address these questions as well as and others cosmic riddles in a talk followed by a panel conversation with Rudolph Tanzi, Menas Kafatos and Lothar Schäfer.
