Menas Kafatos and Jay Kumar – Seeking the Sacred in Science: Quantum Theory, Cosmology & Consciousness
location: San Jose Room
Why are we here? What is the meaning of existence? How do humans fit into the universe? What is consciousness? These existential questions on the nature of our human experience have been explored from competing perspectives by the two dynamic forces of religion and science. This unique and inspiring workshop investigates how scientific inquiry and spiritual faith might express complementarity and achieve unity. This integral approach to examining the nature of consciousness will be examined through the lens of both science and religion.
BENTINHO MASSARO – Each Part contains All of Existence – Living in Fullness
location: Live Oak Room
Every single experience available in existence has one common point of contact: You. Consciousness. The Here and Now. Everything meets in the here and now of your very own consciousness.
This means that you can actually learn to experience directly what it feels like to be in a state of overflowing fullness, where lack and need are no longer relevant or true, because you feel that you contain the existence of All That Is, was or will be.
You can experience a changeless state of joy and abundance, where you are rooted in the confidence that everything is possible, backed up by the direct seeing that every part contains the whole: That every sub-atomic particle contains the entirety of any universe that ever existed, exists or will exist.
Each portion of existence is felt and seen to be saturated with literally infinite possibilities. All is already entangled as One.
This understanding and way of being transcends the sense of space, time, motion, distance and separation, and it feels like living in a fullness that’s hard to describe, an inseparability of All That Is which has to be tasted to be understood.
ELLEN EMMET – The Awakening Body: Exploring the Body in the Light of Non-duality
location: Guadalupe Room
Universal awareness is the essential substance of our being and the reality of all experience.
When we knowingly abide here as this pure open Awareness, we recognize that all experiences: thoughts, bodily sensations and sense perceptions arise effortlessly from within it to express it as peace, love and beauty.
In our meeting we will give special attention to the experience we call the body.
For most of us, the deep rooted and conditioned habits in the body that create and perpetuate the illusion that our identity is limited, solid and separate, remain unseen and active beneath the surface of our contemplation. This is true even when our understanding is clear and strong at the level of the mind. Thus the real ‘I’, Awareness, is felt to be separate and limited. Meanwhile, the body’s harmonious and organic functioning remains compromised by an unnatural, complicated and, ultimately, impossible mission to maintain the tangible sense of an illusory separate identity.
SCOTT KILOBY – Changing the Addiction/Recovery Paradigm: Notes from the Kiloby Center
location: San Martin Room
In this workshop, Scott Kiloby, founder of the Kiloby Center for Recovery in Palm Springs, CA will be introducing, explaining and instructing participants on the effective new approach being used at the Center with clients suffering from addiction, anxiety, depression and even endless spiritual seeking.
Scott’s book “Natural Rest for Addiction”, forms the basis for the approach at the Center. Primarily a nondual approach, Scott’s work incorporates his Living Inquiries, which also contain a psychological element that releases the sense of lack and core-woundedness that often fuels addiction. The Living Inquiries include the Compulsion Inquiry, which dissolves addictive thoughts and sensations in the moment they arise and the Anxiety Inquiry, which relaxes the fear and anxiety around withdrawal and living without addictive substances and activities.
The primary component of Scott’s work is the undoing of what Scott calls “The Velcro Effect” which is the experience of thoughts (i.e., words and mental pictures) feeling stuck or velcroed to bodily energy (i.e., sensations and emotions). The Velcro Effect is responsible for suffering, according to Scott. Living a life free of suffering is simply a matter of undoing this Effect through gentle, direct looking with simple, experiential, non-intellectual questions. Those who use the inquiries realize that they cannot find the desire for the substance, cannot find any threat in living without it and cannot find a self that is lacking.
In addition to the Inquiries, Scott has been working daily at the Center, constantly developing new and innovate ways to release addictive tendencies as well as depression, anxiety and seeking in general. This workshop will include both information about the Center and Scott’s approach as well as much experiential work.
LOTHAR SCHÄFER – Quantum Reality and the Spiritual Mind
location: Morgan Hill Room
The Spiritual Mind is a mind that can search for truths in the non-empirical background of the universe. The phenomena of quantum physics show that such a background exists, which doesn’t consist of material things, but of non-material forms or patterns of information. These forms are real, even though they are invisible, because they have the potential to act on us. They form a realm of potentiality in the background of the visible reality and all empirical things and concepts are emanations out of this realm. There are indications that the forms in the realm of potentiality are contiguous and mind-like, like the thoughts in our mind. Thus, the background of the universe now appears as an indivisible wholeness, and consciousness is a cosmic property that is mystically connected with our mind.
RUPERT SPIRA and A. H. ALMAAS, facilitated by ZAYA BENAZZO – Exploring the Nature and Dynamic of Experience
location: Monterey Room
The only knowledge we have of a world is our experience. What is the nature of experience, and how does it happen? What are the means through which the nature of experience and how it happens may be discovered?
In this conversation with Rupert Spira and A. H. Almaas we will explore the nature and dynamic of experience, and their two distinct approaches to that inquiry.
RUPERT SPIRA – The Direct Path
Location: San Martin Room
I am aware of thoughts, I am aware of images, I am aware of feelings, I am aware of sensations, I am aware of sights, I am aware of sounds, I am aware of tastes, I am aware of textures, I am aware of smells, I am aware…I am aware…I am aware…
What is it that remains present throughout our lives? Only that is worthy of the name ‘I’. See that the experience of ‘being aware’ never leaves us; it cannot be parted, separated or removed from us. That alone is ‘I’. Being aware, or aware Being.
What would happen if we ceased being fascinated by what we are aware of and became interested instead in the experience of ‘being aware’ itself?
Be aware of being aware. That is the essence of self-enquiry; that is self-remembering; that is sinking the mind into the heart; that is the practice of the presence of God.
Allow the experience of ‘being aware’, the knowing of our own Being – its knowing of itself in us – to come out of the background of experience and into the foreground. Allow it to infiltrate, pervade and saturate all thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions with its luminosity and emptiness.
See that all experience shines with the infinite light of your own Being alone.
JOHN HAGELIN – Consciousness: Down the Rabbit Hole: Entanglement, Worm Holes, and the Brain
Location: Monterey Room
Supernormal abilities: Celestial vision, divine healing, levitation, bilocation… Are they real? If We present cutting-edge evidence that the core phenomenon of consciousness originates DEEP within the physical realm—in quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and ultimately superstring theory (unified field theory).
Some scientists (e.g, Penrose) have proposed that consciousness originates from Planck-scale mechanisms rooted in quantum gravity. We confirm that hypothesis using today’s highly successful quantum gravity theories: String theory and M-theory.
We further illuminate how these core, Planck-scale mechanics of consciousness relate to brain-scale cognitive functioning. That is, we explain the bridge between these Planck-scale dynamics and the human EEG: How does Consciousness enter the brain? We present a novel mechanism for this bridge—a mechanism that simultaneously sheds light on numerous, long-standing mind-body enigmas.
Finally, we distinguish content-free consciousness (Samadhi) from awareness of content. We identify in the EEG this content-free consciousness (“the observer”) with global-alpha1-coherence; the content of consciousness (“the observed”) with high frequency gamma synchrony; and the observer-observed relationship with the stable, phase-locked harmonic resonance between the alpha1 (the observer) and the gamma (the observed).
This allows us to distinguish ordinary waking consciousness from Samadhi, and Samadhi from Enlightenment—thereby unlocking the key to experiencing both Samadhi and Enlightenment.
MENAS KAFATOS – Nature and Experience of Consciousness in Shaivism and Relationship to Modern Science
Location: San Jose Room
The great non-dualistic systems in Eastern thought originating in India, non-dualistic Vedanta and Shaivism, give us a higher view of the individual, the universe and the nature of consciousness. The underlying premise, is that the human being is a reflection of fundamental Consciousness and that in fact there is no difference between the individual and the universal. Shaivism, particularly the version that flourished in Kashmir between the 8th – 12th centuries CE, was developed in the tradition of Vedanta but also went beyond reaching new levels of height in both practice and thought. It is a Trika (triadic) system, of Shiva (absolute, undifferentiated Consciousness), Shakti (universal creative aspect), and the individual soul. Shaivism teaches that there is no difference between Shiva and Shakti, and in fact no difference between them and the individual. What appear as differences in the objectified world, are projected differences in the universal screen of Consciousness.
In this workshop we will study selected sūtras from some of the great Shaivite texts, contemplate their content and draw analogies with modern science. The parallels with modern quantum theory and the role of the observer are very interesting, understanding trika principles applying to both. In particular, qualia, the collection of vast numbers of subjective experiences, play a fundamental role in both monistic and scientific systems in the unfoldment of Consciousness. The universe is conscious.
PETER RENGEL – Heart Meditation – Awakening your Spiritual Love
location: Guadalupe Room
This time for us to be together is not a lecture, nor a workshop, nor any traditional form of meditation.
Meditation can be tricky. Rather than exploring the realms of consciousness that lie beneath our thoughts, what we often experience is no more than sitting in silence and thinking. And thinking. And thinking. We can stay within the limited realms of the linear mind forever. Or we can awaken our Divinity by touching into the “Infinite Inner Self” that lies beneath our thoughts.
This mini-retreat offers a “Touching Souls” Puja Circle to create a profound safety and connection among us. There are also tender, paired exercises to further exchange your Heart energy with others, as we all become vehicles for one another to come home to Love.
Then, as you participate in Peter’s unique “Heart Meditation,” you will have opportunities to open to your own spiritual vulnerability. This allows you to fall back into your “Infinite Inner Self” from which our Divinity arises. As this process unfolds, you discover new depths of your Beauty, Strength, Tenderness, Joy, Innocence, Love, and Spirituality. A delicate kind of Grace showers you with blessings that satisfy you all the way down to your Soul.
Imagine feeling loved, lovable and loving in a short, three-hour time span. Deepen your inner peace, whether you have ever meditated or not. You can learn ways to more effectively dance beneath your thoughts and be nurtured by the vast richness of the Universal Love within your own Heart.
RICHARD LANG – Seeing Who You Really Are
location: Morgan Hill Room
This workshop is a refreshingly modern way of discovering who you really are – the boundless, timeless awareness that is everyone’s True Self.
In this workshop Richard will guide you through awareness exercises that invite you to notice the difference between what you are for others, your appearance, and what you are for yourself, your reality. You are not required to believe or imagine anything. As amazing as it sounds, all you are asked to do is look.
What a treasure you find when you look: All things are within you. Come to this workshop and discover this beautiful, deep truth about yourself. And then go on re-discovering who you really are in your daily life, whenever you choose.
Richard Lang first saw who he really was in a workshop in 1970 with the English philosopher Douglas Harding, author of ‘On Having No Head’. Since then he has devoted his life to Seeing, and to sharing this simple, accessible Way. He has published two books, several videos and a CD, and travels widely giving workshops.
